Apple Eyes OpenAI & Anthropic: Claude & ChatGPT Models May Power Next-Gen Siri
With the upgraded version of Siri still absent, Bloomberg reports that Apple may be considering a strategic shift—potentially partnering with OpenAI or Anthropic to enhance Siri’s capabilities using third-party large language models.
Apple had originally planned to launch a next-generation Siri in 2025, built upon its own in-house AI models—capable of understanding personalized language intent and performing actions across multiple apps. However, due to sluggish development, reports of delays emerged as early as March, and during WWDC 2025, the company offered no concrete release timeline, merely revealing that a fully redesigned architecture was in the works for the upcoming Siri experience.
According to the report, Apple has recently initiated talks with both OpenAI and Anthropic, requesting model variants that could operate within Apple’s Private Cloud Compute framework—ensuring data privacy and user security remain uncompromised.
While elements of the newly introduced Apple Intelligence service already incorporate ChatGPT, shifting Siri’s core functions to depend on external models would mark a profound departure from Apple’s traditional development philosophy. This move also highlights internal structural changes: Siri’s leadership has been handed over to Mike Rockwell, previously in charge of the Vision Pro project, while broader AI development has transitioned from John Giannandrea to Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering.
A comparable approach can be seen in Samsung’s Galaxy AI strategy, which integrates proprietary innovations but relies heavily on Google’s Gemini model at its core. Should Apple adopt a similar path, it could significantly enhance the user experience in the short term, while retaining the flexibility to revert to its own technologies in the future—a strategy mirrored by Apple’s early collaboration with Google on various apps, which have since been increasingly replaced by in-house services within iOS.
As current developments suggest, Apple is poised to introduce a suite of AI-assisted features this fall alongside iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26. These will include text summarization, automated writing assistance, personalized recommendations, and real-time translation. However, the upgraded version of Siri is not expected to be unveiled until sometime in 2026.
