Android has data encryption capabilities better than iPhone
Regarding the security comparison between iOS and Andoird, most people believe that there is no need to discuss it, but the recent statement of the Fort Worth Police Department, Detective Rex Kiser is thought-provoking: “Some of the newer operating systems are harder to get data from than others. I think a lot of these … companies are just trying to make it harder for law enforcement to get data from these phones … Right now, we’re getting into iPhones. A year ago we couldn’t get into iPhones, but we could get into all the Androids. Now we can’t get into a lot of the Androids.”
One of Detective Rex Kiser’s jobs is to provide digital forensics to the Fort Worth Police Department. Cellebrite is a popular software they commonly use and is widely used to crack iPhone and Android phones. It helps investigators access data from GPS records, short messages, call logs, contacts, and more, as well as data from specific applications like Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and more. This data can be used as evidence in court. Especially when cracking iPhone’s encrypted content, this process is quite easy.
However, when it comes to cracking the encryption of some famous Android smartphones, the Cellebrite tool is so laborious that it cannot extract any social media, Internet browsing, GPS data, etc. from smartphones such as the Galaxy S9 and Google Pixel 2. When decrypting the Huawei P20 Pro, nothing could be extracted at all.
However, the report did not say that Android smartphones are unbreakable. To crack the encryption of new Android smartphones, investigators generally need more resources and time, and the process has become more laborious.
