AMD’s multiple Ryzen/Radeon 7000 series GPU codenames announced
Recently, the detailed specifications of the Navi 3x series GPUs based on the RDNA 3 architecture have been exposed, along with a series of GPU architecture codes. AMD still uses the fish name as the code name in these new products.
According to Phoronix, the code names of the RDNA 3 architecture GPUs are:
- Plum Bonito – AMD Radeon RX 7900 series
- Wheat Nas – AMD Radeon RX 7800 & 7700 series
- Hotpink – Bonefish AMD Radeon RX 7600 series
- Pink Sardine – AMD Ryzen 7000 & AMD Radeon 700M
Navi 31’s codename Plum Bonito has appeared before, while Navi 32’s Wheat Nas and Navi 33’s Hotpink Bonefish appear for the first time. The Phoenix APUs belonging to the Ryzen 7000 series are codenamed Pink Sardine. In the past, Rembrandt and Green Sardine APUs were codenamed Yellow Carp and Green Sardine, following the same rules.
In a GPU based on the RDNA 2 architecture, the Navi 21 used by the Radeon RX 6800/6900 series is called Sienna Cichlid, and the Navi 22 used by the Radeon RX 6700 series is called Navy Flounder. The Navi 23 used by the Radeon RX 6600 series is Dimgrey Cavefish, while the Navi 24 used by the Radeon RX 6400/6500 series is Beige Goby.
Interesting, Pink Sardine, Raven Ridge, Renoir, Van Gogh, and Yellow Carp use the same device ID, namely “0x15E2”. AMD doesn’t seem to use a different ID for each APU, but rather by different versions. These codenames will be used internally by AMD, not for marketing purposes, to help track the development process of a specific architecture. For example, these codenames can be seen in Linux system patches or drivers to help quickly identify specific GPUs.
