AMD’s acquisition of Xilinx has been approved by UK regulators
Compared with the various twists and turns encountered by rival Nvidia’s acquisition of ARM, AMD’s acquisition of Xilinx is much easier. The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched an investigation into this acquisition in early May. The original plan for the end date of the first phase of the investigation was in July. However, the investigation seems to be going very well. Today CMA announced that it has approved AMD’s plan to acquire Xilinx. In the announcement, the CMA did not provide too many details about its decision but said it would announce the full text at a later date.
Prior to this, the transaction did not cause regulatory review by the US Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice. At the same time, the prescribed objection period passed in January this year. At the end of May, AMD submitted a proposal to the European Commission, and the problem is not expected to be big. In addition to passing the review of the United States and the European Union, the transaction also needs to be approved by Chinese regulatory agencies.
Earlier this year, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced a new patent from AMD, which relates to the future integration of CPU and FPGA, increasing the relevance between the two solutions. It can be seen that AMD has confirmed that the integration action after the acquisition of Xilinx is very rapid, and it is also full of confidence. With Xilinx’s strength in the telecommunications field, AMD can also participate more in emerging platforms such as 5G networks and artificial intelligence in the future.
