AMD and MediaTek discussed the formation of a joint venture
MediaTek has had a very good performance recently. According to statistics from market research institutions, it gained 43% of the global smartphone SoC market share in the second quarter of 2021, which was a significant increase compared to 35% in the first quarter, overwhelming rival Qualcomm. In addition, in the GTC 2021 keynote speech, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced the establishment of a partnership with MediaTek. MediaTek will be licensed by GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs to apply Ampere-based graphics cards to MT819x SoCs.
MediaTek is still expanding its business footprint recently and is coming together with AMD. According to ComputerBase reports, MediaTek is AMD’s preferred partner for modems on SoCs in the future, and the two parties also discussed the possibility of establishing a joint venture company, but there are no more details for the time being. Since MediaTek and AMD have relatively few overlaps in business, they may have complementary effects. AMD also hopes to expand its influence in the mobile market in this way.
In fact, AMD has already cooperated with MediaTek, but the scale is relatively small for the time being. It was previously reported that AMD developed a Wi-Fi chip called AMD RZ608, which is actually MediaTek’s MT7921K. AMD hopes to use this as a basis to provide SoC 5G solutions to mobile platforms in the future. AMD has mainly cooperated with Qualcomm in the past. In terms of communication technology, Qualcomm is in a leading position in this field. In contrast, AMD’s cooperation with MediaTek may focus on the entry-level market.
AMD is also cooperating with Samsung in the mobile market to provide mRDNA architecture GPUs for Exynos series products. The first devices are expected to be unveiled in early 2022.
