As early as two months ago, it was reported that MediaTek is AMD’s preferred partner for modems on SoCs in the future, and there is also the possibility of establishing a joint venture company. Since the two parties have relatively few overlaps in business, they may have complementary effects. AMD also hopes to expand its influence in the mobile market in this way. In fact, AMD has already started to cooperate with MediaTek. Its Wi-Fi chip called AMD RZ608 is actually MediaTek’s MT7921K.
Today both AMD and MediaTek announced their respective cooperation plans to jointly design industry-leading Wi-Fi solutions. The first products are AMD RZ600 series Wi-Fi 6E modules that include MediaTek chipsets. It will power the AMD Ryzen series of notebooks and desktops in 2022 and beyond, providing speed, low latency, and less signal interference for Wi-Fi connections.
In order to better optimize the AMD RZ600 series Wi-Fi 6E module, AMD and MediaTek have developed and certified PCIe and USB interfaces for sleep state and power management, providing users with a seamless connection experience. Through stress testing and ensuring product compatibility standards, the development cycle of OEM customers can be shortened.
AMD RZ600 series Wi-Fi 6E modules support the latest connection standards of 2×2 Wi-Fi 6 (2.4/5GHz) and 2×2 Wi-Fi 6E (6 GHz band up to 7.125 GHz), and Bluetooth 5.2 (BT/BLE), integrate PA and LNA amplifiers to optimize power consumption and reduce the occupied area so that it can be installed in laptops of various sizes. AMD RZ600 series Wi-Fi 6E modules are available in RZ616 and RZ608. The difference is that the RZ616 supports 160MHz channel bandwidth, the rate can reach 2.4Gbps, and supports M.2 2230 and 1216 specifications. The RZ608 has an 80MHz channel bandwidth and a rate of 1.2Gbps, which only supports the M.2 2230 specification.
