Although the market downturn led to a drop in demand, AMD’s market share continues to grow

According to a report last quarter by research analyst firm Mercury Research, AMD hit a new record of 27.7% of the overall x86 processor market in the first quarter of 2022. Although the market downturn has led to a drop in demand over the past few months, AMD has not been affected, and its share is still increasing in both the PC and server markets.

According to TomsHardware, the latest report from Mercury Research shows that the PC market is in a tougher situation in the second quarter of 2022. Judging from recent earnings reports from Intel, AMD, and Nvidia, the recovery will be a long one. In contrast, AMD seems to be more able to withstand the test and is still in various market segments to seize market share from Intel.

In the second quarter of 2022, AMD’s revenue was $6.55 billion, an increase of 70% year-over-year and an increase of 11.3% sequentially. This is the first time that AMD’s quarterly revenue has exceeded the $6 billion mark, and it has set a new record for single-quarter revenue for eight consecutive quarters. At present, AMD is going all out to prepare new products, and the Ryzen 7000 series, Radeon RX 7000 series and the EPYC series based on Zen 4 architecture are all ready to go.

The combination of COVID-19, global economic turmoil, and inflation affecting the entire market, combined with seasonal factors, has resulted in lower market demand and sluggish desktop processor sales. However, AMD’s market share has achieved sequential growth, reaching 20.6% in the second quarter of 2022. If calculated by sales amount, AMD’s revenue share increased by 0.7 percentage points year-on-year to 18.8%.

In the second quarter of 2022, AMD continued to make progress in the mobile market, once again setting a new record, reaching 24.8%. If calculated by sales amount, AMD’s revenue share increased by 12.1 percentage points year-on-year to 27.0%, which also hit a record high.

AMD’s own server share forecasts are based on IDC’s forecasts but are limited to the one-socket and two-socket server markets, excluding four-socket and above servers, network infrastructure servers, and other devices. As such, the numbers from Mercury Research differ from those cited by AMD, which forecasts a higher market share.
AMD continued its three-year streak of growth, with market share increasing for 13 consecutive quarters and setting a new record at 13.9%. If calculated by sales amount, AMD’s revenue share increased by 11.3 percentage points year-on-year to 22.9%.

While some of the market segments in the statistics do not include semi-custom and the Internet of Things, the Mercury Research data does. While the final figures are yet to come, AMD’s share of the overall x86 processor market in Q2 2022 will undoubtedly hit a new high, which means it will set a new record for three consecutive quarters.
