Microsoft says 150 million users use passwordless login every month

by ddos · May 9, 2020

Passwordless login authentication is a security authentication method being implemented in the industry, that is, users do not need to enter a password when logging in to their own account.

This login method currently mainly relies on biometric verification, FIDO hardware certification, and validator verification apps, etc., and the security aspect has been greatly improved.

Passwordless login authentication is currently the most widely used on the Windows 10 platform, which is mainly due to the increased Windows Hello biometrics by Microsoft.

According to Microsoft, the password-less login authentication of the company’s platform has reached 150 million users per month, and it has increased by 50 million users in only half a year.

The biggest advantage of passwordless login authentication is that it can significantly improve security because users do not enter passwords, so they can deal with hidden dangers such as keyloggers.

In terms of efficiency, the passwordless login authentication performance is also very good, for example, with the help of hardware authentication and Windows users click and log in very fast via Windows Hello (fingerprint and facial recognition).

Compared with the traditional input of long passwords and the input of multi-factor dynamic authentication codes, the efficiency is also improved, so Microsoft is strongly recommending passwordless login authentication.

Microsoft writes:

“Microsoft’s IT team switched to passwordless authentication and now 90 percent of Microsoft employees sign in without entering a password. As a result, hard and soft costs of supporting passwords fell by 87 percent.”

Passwordless login authentication now supports multiple Microsoft services, such as Microsoft account, Azure, Office, Github, and even Xbox game consoles.

Microsoft is also recommending other customers to use passwordless login to improve employee efficiency and reduce IT costs. Customers can also improve security after deploying passwordless authentication.
