Australia is preparing to verify the people from visiting porn sites through the face recognition system

Some time ago, the UK announced that it had abandoned the previously planned adult website verification program, which aims to identify pornographic visitors to ensure that they have reached adulthood. The measures proposed at the time were mainly verified by installing additional software on the visitor’s computer, or by visiting a special identification card. However, due to the controversy and privacy concerns, the plan was abandoned, and the UK government is currently considering a new verification plan for deployment.

Australia's 2020 Cyber Security Strategy

The Australian Pornographic Access Verification Program is much more thorough than the UK, and Australia‘s Department of Home Affairs is developing a face recognition service to support the verification program. The Australian government said that the newly developed face recognition service will collect facial information from visitors and then compare it with Australian citizen database information. When the verification system confirms the identity of the visitor and has reached adulthood, it will allow access to the adult website. If the information is unsuccessful, the user will be prevented from continuing to access it. This verification system helps porn sites prevent non-adults from using their parents’ documents to bypass age restrictions, which were previously easily bypassed.

At least this plan in Australia seems to be more thorough than the UK plan. After all, minors are unlikely to be able to easily bypass the face recognition system. Australia’s launch of the verification program is mainly aimed at combating the viewing of pornographic content by minors. According to child protection requirements, minors are prohibited from viewing pornographic content. Specific details may require the visitor’s device to be equipped with a camera for face recognition, and if it is not possible to authenticate, the visitor is denied access. However, there are also many Australian users who refuse to verify. These users are mainly worried that the verification information when they watch pornographic videos will be leaked. In particular, if the verification system is hacked, it will inevitably cause great trouble to the user.
