PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan: First-party games won’t debut on PlayStation Plus

Sony recently finally officially announced the long-rumored PlayStation Plus service. This subscription service is similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass in that you can play games through subscriptions. The difference is that there are 3 tiers of PlayStation Plus subscriptions, each with a different number of games that can be played. However, what more players care about is whether the first-party games will join the PlayStation Plus service for the first time. In response to this problem, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said: “No.”

PlayStation Plus currently has 3 levels, from the cheapest to the most expensive, it is divided into Essential, Extra, and Premium. In terms of the most cost-effective annual subscriptions, the three are priced at $59.99, $99.99 and $119.99. However, the Essential level is actually the old version of PlayStation Plus. Players can only download two games per month. If players want to play casually in the massive game library, then at least subscribe to the Extra level with up to 400 games.
For now, PlayStation Plus has a crushing advantage over Xbox Game Pass in terms of the number of games. After all, players at the Premium level can play an additional 340 classic PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, and PSP games in the form of cloud games. But there’s one thing PlayStation Plus lacks, and that’s the launch of first-party titles. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, CEO Jim Ryan said that

We feel like we are in a good virtuous cycle with the studios, where the investment delivers success, which enables yet more investment, which delivers yet more success. We like that cycle and we think our gamers like that cycle.

He believes that the current quality of first-party games is maintained because the studio has sufficient funds, if games made by PlayStation Studios are added to PlayStation Plus for the first time, it will affect their income, thus breaking this virtuous circle.

At present, both Microsoft and Sony’s game subscription services have played their own cards. It also showed the majority of players their views and opinions on the service of game subscription, so how to choose depends on the players themselves.
