Sony announces full-year financial results for fiscal 2021

Today, Sony announced its full-year financial results for fiscal 2021 (from April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022). The financial report shows that the total revenue reached 9,921.5 billion yen, a year-on-year increase of 10%; the annual operating profit was 1,202.3 billion yen. Sony is also the second company in the Japanese manufacturing industry to exceed 1 trillion yen in operating profit after Toyota; Net profit was 882.1 billion yen, down 14% year-on-year.

Sony said that despite the uncertain global economic environment and slowing economic growth, Sony has achieved a double increase in sales revenue and operating profit in the five main businesses of entertainment, technology and services, games and network services, film and television, music, imaging, and sensing solutions.

Among the five main businesses, the entertainment, technology, and service business revenue were 2,339.2 billion yen, a year-on-year increase of 13%, and the operating profit was 212.9 billion yen, a year-on-year increase of 66%; Game and network service business revenue was 2,739.8 billion yen, an increase of 83.5 billion yen year-on-year, and operating profit was 346.1 billion yen, a year-on-year increase of 4.4 billion yen; the film and television business revenue was 1,238.9 billion yen, a year-on-year increase of 65%, and the operating profit was 217.4 billion yen, a year-on-year increase of 172%; music business revenue was 1,116.9 billion yen, up 19% year-on-year, and operating profit was 210.9 billion yen, up 172% year-on-year; the revenue of the imaging and sensing solutions business was 1,076.4 billion yen, an increase of 6% year-on-year, and the operating profit was 155.6 billion yen, an increase of 9.7 billion yen year-on-year.

In the PlayStation business, PlayStation 5 sales have declined to varying degrees compared with the same period last year and Sony’s previous forecast for fiscal 2021, mainly due to supply chain shortages. As of March 31, 2022, PlayStation 5 shipments reached 19.3 million units, and PlayStation 4 shipments reached 117.2 million units. The number of PlayStation Plus subscribers was 47.4 million, a decrease of 200,000 from 47.6 million in the same period of the previous fiscal year.
