Nvidia CEO expresses his views on AMD’s authorization of Samsung’s RDNA 2 architecture IP for the mobile market

Samsung and AMD announced a strategic partnership in June 2019. As part of this agreement, Samsung will obtain AMD graphics IP authorization and apply it on mobile platforms to focus on enhancing the provision of essential advanced graphics technologies and solutions on mobile devices (including smartphones).

After many years, AMD has finally returned to smartphones and other mobile devices with the RDNA 2 architecture. On the other hand, many people are curious about whether NVIDIA, as a competitor, will also adopt the method of cooperating with other manufacturers to return to the smartphone market again. At this year’s GTC conference, Nvidia has announced that it will cooperate with MediaTek to customize SoCs for devices such as Chromebooks.

According to HotHardware, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang also expressed his views on this. He said that games using ray tracing technology are relatively large and require high data processing capacity. When the time is ripe, he may consider doing so. It is not easy for mobile devices to use ray tracing technology at this stage. In addition to the storage capacity needed to meet the needs of large amounts of data, there are also huge challenges in terms of performance. Nvidia’s current strategy is to use GeForce Now streaming services to respond to the mobile gaming market in order to bypass hardware performance barriers.
Samsung’s first SoC using RDNA 2 architecture GPU is said to be Exynos 2200, which will be announced later this year, and the first batch of products will be shipped soon.
