Kioxia Celebrates the 35th Anniversary of NAND Flash Invention

NAND flash memory can be seen everywhere in today’s society, whether it is in PCs or smartphones, or other various electronic products in daily life. The NAND flash memory that changed the world came from Japan. Toshiba, as the inventor, launched the world’s first NAND flash memory chip in 1987, and it has been 35 years since then.

If we go back to 1987, it may be difficult to imagine that NAND flash memory will be so widely used and have such a profound impact on the development of world science and technology. After 35 years of development, the scale of NAND flash memory has reached $70 billion. The chip storage density has also developed from 4Mb to 1.33Tb, an increase of 333,000 times. The emergence of NAND flash memory has made many electronic products popular, from early digital cameras, barcode scanners, and personal digital assistants (PDAs) to today’s smartphones, tablet computers, in-vehicle infotainment systems, and wearable devices. Without NAND flash, some products may not exist at all.

NAND flash is a game-changer and has stood the test of time, said Scott Nelson, senior vice president, and chief marketing officer at Kioxia USA. In the future, Kioxia will lead the way forward and continue to invest in and develop NAND flash memory technology to make its storage density higher and lower cost, further enriching various applications in life.

Kioxia’s celebration of the 35th anniversary of the invention of NAND flash memory will continue in 2022, and a dedicated commemorative page has been created for it.
