In the past year, on the global chip supply shortages, Apple is one of the few manufacturers that can basically guarantee supply. However, with wave after wave of supply chain crises, sometimes it will inevitably be affected. For example, BOE, one of Apple’s screen suppliers, is facing problems with OLED panel production.
According to The Elec, BOE has been purchasing display driver ICs for panels from LX Semicon, but the output is lower than planned. LX Semicon is a subsidiary of LG Display, and given priority to supply to LG in the case of tight production capacity, BOE’s monthly output of OLED panels is reduced by about 2 million to 3 million. It is understood that Apple ordered 10 million OLED panels for iPhone from BOE in the first half of 2022. BOE’s original goal was to ship 40 million OLED panels to the iPhone this year, but it is difficult to achieve this goal now, and it is estimated that it will only reach about 30 million in the end.
Still, BOE is expected to expand its share of Apple’s OLED panel supply. It is said that Apple will still purchase OLED panels from BOE in the iPhone 14 models launched this year. Samsung is currently the largest supplier of OLED panels for Apple’s iPhone models, accounting for more than 60% of the share, followed by LG.
It was previously reported that BOE is launching a new production plant, and its three factories will be converted into production factories for Apple’s OLED panels.
