Google brings a 1080P high bit rate version for YouTube Premium users

Previously, Google tried to make 2160P60 on YouTube a Premium exclusive feature. However, when users tried to watch, they were prompted to upgrade and taken to the YouTube Premium subscription page instead of seeing an enhanced frame rate.

Now, Google has introduced a new feature to attract users to subscribe to YouTube Premium – 1080P Premium. This option can be seen when users set video resolution. The labeling this time is clearer, so at least users should understand that clicking this option requires a subscription.

Like other websites, Google transcodes and compresses videos when creators upload them to save bandwidth. Most videos are 20-30FPS and default to 720P resolution. If the video uploaded by creators was essentially shot at 2K@60 or 4K@60, Google can provide a 60FPS version. However, this feature is only available with a subscription.

In some ways, this feature is positive for YouTube Premium users. Sometimes, 1080P60 might offer a better viewing experience than 4KP30. A higher frame rate means more images played per second, resulting in smoother picture quality.

As for free users, they can only watch ads plus the regular 1080P version. Google needs to make money and pay for users’ bandwidth, so it is not a big problem to watch this way if one doesn’t want to spend money.
