Wi-Fi 7 is on developing phase

Wi-Fi 6 has just landed on some mobile phones, laptops and networking devices. But engineers have begun to focus on the next Wi-Fi 7 standard, with next-generation Wi-Fi speeds of up to 30 Gbits per second, providing better streaming video, covering longer distances and reducing congestion.

This change will begin with the improvement of Wi-Fi 6, which laid the foundation for Wi-Fi 7 to arrive in 2024. In an interview with Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi Day in August, Jones, vice president of technology at Qualcomm, shared some details about how Wi-Fi 7 works. He expects that “I’m excited about delivering a gigabit everywhere in your house, every nook, and cranny. You’ll be at the point where wireless is faster than wired.”

The first expected improvement will increase the capacity of Wi-Fi 6, and the US and European governments may open new bands for radio transmission next year. Second, the update of Wi-Fi 6 in 2022 should increase the speed, especially for users who upload video and other data from mobile phones or personal computers. Third, perhaps the most interesting thing is that Wi-Fi 6 will have a technical upgrade in 2024, and still only know its technical name 802.11be.

At present, no one is willing to officially announce the launch of Wi-Fi 7, including the Wi-Fi Alliance, which only said it will begin to certify Wi-Fi 6 products later this year. Currently, the latest three Wi-Fi engineering standards – IEEE 802.11n, 802.11ac and 802.11ax – are certified as Wi-Fi 4, 5 and 6, respectively. Therefore, 802.11be is a powerful candidate for receiving Wi-Fi 7 tags.
