  • Warning: Windows 10 October Update removed some users’ files

An error in Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) caused some users’ files to be deleted during the installation of a new operating system version. Although it is not known how common this problem is, there have been several online discussions [1] [2] [3] that have caused users to lose files in Windows 10 libraries and public folders.

From the user report, when upgrading from Windows 10 Fall Creators Update to October Update, there will be a chance to encounter a failure through the Windows Update.

Documents such as documents, pictures, music, and videos stored in the Windows 10 library are deleted without any warning. At this time, if the backup is not created before the upgrade, it seems that it cannot be recovered.

Multiple users in the post have already confirmed the problem on their computer, and in most cases, Windows does not seem to create a backup of deleted files automatically. Although there is a Windows.old folder that allows users to return to previous versions of Windows, it does not include backups of data stored in the library.

There is currently no news from Microsoft about this error, and there is no workaround. For this reason, it is recommended that Windows 10 users create a backup of their files before starting to install Windows 10 October Update.

  • Windows 10 October 2018 Update officially released

The highly anticipated Windows 10 October 2018 (Build 17663.1) update is finally available today, and users can install it through the Windows Update, Update Assistant and Media Creation tools.

The Windows 10 October update is somewhat similar to the April update, and the upgrade in new features is not unusually large, but it is also one of the hallmarks of the Windows ecosystem becoming mature. In the October update, the flashy features and theme names no longer exist, and existing features continue to grow, especially regarding cross-device experience.

    Improve the Windows search experience

Microsoft optimised the Windows 10 search experience to provide users with more useful information, both online and local. Also, the company has added a preview panel to display more information based on the user’s search preferences. In local search, users can even get a lot of details including application details. In the search interface, users can fix the application directly to the taskbar or uninstall it.

    Explorer Dark theme

Major software vendors have been pushing the Dark theme in recent months. Facebook has implemented Dark mode on Messenger, and Google is also preparing for the same thing for Android and Chrome OS. Currently, Microsoft has not provided the global Dark mode in Windows 10 systems.

The Dark theme setting was previously limited to Universal Windows applications, while traditional Win32 applications like Explorer and Control Panel have not been updated. However, after several versions of the change, Microsoft finally brought a more consistent Dark theme, and finally determined a softer grey tone.

    Snip and Sketch tool

Instead of the traditional screenshot tool, Microsoft has brought a new screenshot tool based on the universal Windows Framework. Snip and Sketch will also replace the Windows 10 Screen Sketch tool from the previous Windows Ink tool. This is a more modern screenshot tool that adds Windows Ink and quick sharing options to the traditional screenshot tool.

    Cloud clipboard function

The cloud clipboard function is one of the new features introduced. It can significantly expand the common copy-and-paste function to achieve copy and paste between different devices. For example, when you copy/cut photos or text content on the PC side, it will be copied in the cloud clipboard, and users can access and use the material on other devices.

Microsoft’s Dona Sarkar explained: “The scrapbooking history is roaming, using the same technology as Timeline and Sets, meaning that users can access your clipboard on any PC device in the current version and later.”

    Your Phone

    Your Phone Windows 10

For Windows 10 users who use Android phones, Microsoft’s recently launched Your Phone is a very good interactive app that can make the connection between the two platforms more compact and the user’s cross-platform operation becomes more convenient. It can drag and drop images directly between PC and Android phones and allows users to synchronise information on both platforms. After connecting through Microsoft’s secure cloud technology, you can instantly send and receive information on the mobile terminal on the PC.

  • The official name of Windows 10 Build 1809 is Windows 10 October 2018 Update

Microsoft released a blog post in which, in addition to showing some of the new Windows 10 PCs released this week at IFA 2018 in Berlin, Microsoft officially announced that the next feature update for Windows 10 would be called the October 2018 update. The name continues to use the naming method of the Windows 10 2018 update that was released earlier this year.

As you can see from the latest version of Windows 10 Insider Preview, the version number for this update will be 1809. However, the version numbers between different categories of Windows 10 devices are different. For example, the update codenamed Redstone 5 is on the Xbox One console with a version number of 1810.

One of the critical points of the Windows 10 October 2018 update is stability, but it does include some new features, such as Your Phone, which is an app that lets users interact with their phone’s photo library and send and receive text messages, make and receive calls, etc. This is an application that can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. Apps that were updated in April 2018 should also be updated at some point. There is also a file manager with a dark theme.

The long-awaited feature set was cancelled during the test, or at least delayed. It may appear in the preview of the next feature update after this, codenamed 19H1. In other news, Microsoft pointed out that Windows 10 is still only installed on nearly 700 million devices.
