  • Samsung Exynos 2200 appeared on Geekbench

According to Twitter user @BenchLeaks, a test device called Samsung SM-S906B was found in the Geekbench benchmark database, and the AMD GPU driver has been applied. This is likely to be a product equipped with Exynos 2200, using a GPU with mRDNA architecture. In Geekbench, “Samsung Voyager EVTA1” listed in the driver section seems to confirm this. Earlier news said that “Voyager” is the codename of the GPU on Exynos 2200.

Information from Geekbench shows that the Exynos 2200 CPU has 8 cores, four of which are 1.73 GHz, three are 2.5 GHz, and one is 2.59 GHz. These frequencies are lower than Exynos 2100, which means that the test is likely to be engineering samples, rather than the final product or specification. Unfortunately, the GPU specifications cannot be displayed on the above. Earlier rumors pointed out that Exynos 2200 integrates 6 CUs with a total of 384 stream processors, with a frequency of up to 1.31GHz, and supports ray tracing and variable rate shading.

Due to the low frequency, the Exynos 2200’s single-core benchmark test score was 1072 points, and the multi-core benchmark test score was 3389 points, both lower than Exynos 2100’s 1112 points and 4073 points. It is expected that the Galaxy S22 series mobile phones equipped with Exynos 2200 will be unveiled in early 2022, which will be a competitor to the iPhone 13 series.
  • Samsung Exynos 2200 and its GPU code name information leaked

It is rumored that Samsung’s Exynos 2200 will be its first SoC equipped with AMD RDNA 2 architecture GPU. It will support ray tracing and variable-rate shading, and its graphics performance will be 30% faster than the Mali-G78 used in Exynos 2100. It easily beat Samsung Exynos 2100, Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, and Apple’s A14 bionic in the 3DMark Wild Life test, higher than any device running Android system, but lower than devices based on the M1 chip. It is believed that even the Snapdragon 895 that Qualcomm will launch this year, its graphics performance will be inferior.

According to people familiar with the matter, Vivo may use Samsung Exynos 2200 to build a high-end smartphone or even the first product. And Samsung is likely to make the Exynos 2200 public for the first time this month. According to Wccftech reports, more information about Exynos 2200 has flowed out recently. It was originally code-named “Pamir” and will be manufactured using a 4nm process, while the GPU code-named “Voyager” is a Samsung and AMD cooperation.

Compared with performance, people are generally more worried about its power consumption. It is said that there are some problems with this product that still need to be solved at this stage. Heat is one of them, which is higher than expected. Samsung is still looking for solutions to these problems in order to achieve a balance between performance and power consumption. However, Samsung seems very confident and satisfied with AMD’s architecture. It has begun to discuss the licensing and research and development of next-generation products with AMD.

It is rumored that Qualcomm Snapdragon 895, like Samsung Exynos 2200, will be manufactured using Samsung’s 4nm process. At this stage, the production capacity of advanced processes is tight. In addition, it has been reported that the yield rate of Samsung’s 5nm process is less than 50%, and the news that the 3nm GAAFET process node has been postponed has made many people sweat about the advancement of Samsung’s advanced technology.
  • Samsung’s new Exynos SoC may not be exclusive to Galaxy phones

According to previous news, Samsung will release Exynos SoC with integrated RDNA 2 architecture GPU next month and will use this chip in the next new Galaxy S series flagship phones. Many users hope that Samsung’s Exynos chip can bring a new atmosphere to the mobile platform. The support for ray tracing and variable rate coloring has raised expectations.
According to Wccftech reports, this Exynos SoC with integrated RDNA 2 architecture GPU may be named Exynos 2200. At the same time, it is not only interested in ordinary users, but also mobile phone manufacturers. According to people familiar with the matter, Vivo may use Samsung Exynos 2200 to build a high-end smartphone or even the first product. This also reflects that Samsung is open to this chip, not limited to its own products.

    Samsung AMD negotiations
Samsung Exynos 2100 is already close to Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 in performance. Its biggest weakness is the GPU. If Exynos 2200 can turn its disadvantages into advantages, more mobile phone manufacturers may cooperate with Samsung. After all, at this stage, the mobile phone manufacturers can choose to use a single platform.
It is rumored that both Samsung Exynos 2200 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 895 will be manufactured using Samsung’s 4nm process, so production capacity should be guaranteed. Even if the sales of Samsung’s next Galaxy S series flagship phones are not as expected, it can also profit by selling Exynos 2200 chips to offset the loss of mobile phone sales and create a new source of income.
It is still unclear what kind of performance Exynos 2200 will have, and there are rumors that the performance is relatively strong. Compared to performance, power consumption and heat generation should be more concerned.
  • AMD joins the Android ecosystem, the super SoC is coming

At the recent Computex Online 2021, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su announced that Samsung’s next-generation flagship SoC will be equipped with custom graphics IP provided by AMD, supporting ray tracing and VRS variable rendering rate. Recently, some media have exposed the GFXBench running scores of early samples of Samsung’s next-generation flagship mobile processor Samsung Exynos 2200.

According to the result, the performance of Manhattan 3.1, Aztek Normal, and Aztek High School in the GFXBench GPU test, Exynos 2200 scores are 181.8 FPS, 138.25 FPS, 58 FPS, respectively. In comparison, the results of Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro A14 were 146.4 FPS, 79.8 FPS, and 30.5 FPS, respectively.

This set of data means that Exynos 2200 with AMD RDNA 2 architecture has significantly ahead of Apple A14 in terms of GPU performance. If the mass production version can maintain such results, then Exynos 2200 is expected to represent the first time that the Android ecosystem processor beats Apple’s A-series processors in terms of GPU performance.

It’s not surprising that Samsung Exynos 2200 with AMD RDNA 2 architecture has such high graphics performance. On PCs, Microsoft Xbox Series X, and SONY PS5 game consoles, AMD RDNA2 architecture has already proven its strength.
