AMD will build a new CPU design center in New York

With the great success of the client-side Ryzen series and the enterprise-side EPYC series in recent years, sales have soared, and AMD has gradually increased its investment in research and development. The related budget has been raised from $1 billion in 2016 to $2.8 billion in 2021, bringing in more resources to develop related hardware and software. Higher investment also means that a larger-scale R&D team needs to be built.

Recently, AMD employee Mike Evans said on his Twitter account that AMD is expanding its CPU team and plans to build a new design center in New York, USA, to enhance its research and development capabilities. This approach by companies may be used to strengthen existing businesses or serve new ones, and AMD’s new R&D center in New York is likely to be the latter.

Recent analysis pointed out that AMD will grow faster than its peers and continue to take market share from rival Intel, including the personal computing and server markets. This trend will continue this year and next year and is expected to remain at least until the end of 2024. However, since the release of Alder Lake, Intel seems to have stopped its continuous decline in the consumer market for many years and has formed an evenly matched situation with AMD. The next Raptor Lake could even turn the tide. It’s just that in the more profitable enterprise market, Intel doesn’t seem to be able to stop AMD’s progress for some time to come.

The technology in the semiconductor industry is changing rapidly, and it is clear that AMD also needs to prepare for the future.
