Winamp 5.8 releases: focus on improving compatibility with Windows 8.1/10
Winamp was once the most popular music player in the world, and in 2014 AOL sold it to Radionomy. The new company promises to re-launch the app, and Winamp is finally back after four years of waiting.
The classic media player Winamp returns to the user’s field of vision, and the official version of 5.8 is now open for download. The Winamp 5.8 release focuses on compatibility with Windows 8.1/Windows 10 systems, although the new version still doesn’t use native APIs, users can run this old player perfectly on new hardware.
Although the Winamp 5.8 stable version is not a major update, it undoubtedly marks the return of this popular media player. Winamp 5.8 for Windows main update:
- Added support for the Windows Audio (WASAPI) output plugin (WIP).
- Users can completely disable Winamp’s support features and use it entirely as an audio player.
- Automatic full-screen option for video preferences
- Added /ENUMPLAYLISTS support for the command line
- Optimize compatibility with Windows 8.1 and Windows 10
- The old MikMod player has been replaced with OpenMPT-based Module Player
- Users can easily browse the path and edit music album name function in Ctrl+E
- Scrollbars and buttons get updated. This update is limited to Bento skin
- Winamp now has a playlist feature that has been enabled in Bento and Modern skins
- Fix bugs where users cannot remember URLs when resetting history in Open URL dialogue
