Why the ASUS RTX 3080 Ti TUF OC was running extremely hotter than normal?

The heat dissipation problem of high-end RTX 30 series graphics cards has always been a concern of many players. After all, the heat generation of GDDR6X is also relatively high. Recently, some netizens on Reddit found out that the thermal paste on the video memory on their RTX 30 series graphics card was crooked or missing.

Recently, two netizens on Reddit, Kamaloo92 and obamaprism3, shared their memory heat dissipation problems on RTX 30 series graphics cards. The problem encountered by kamaloo92 is that on their TUF RTX 3080 Ti Gaming OC graphics card, there is 4 GDDR6X video memory without thermal paste at all, resulting in a video memory temperature of up to 110°C. After kamaloo92 took apart the graphics card and added a third-party thermal paste, the temperature dropped to within 80°C.

Another netizen, obamaprism3, found that the thermal paste on his RTX 3080 public graphics card was completely out of alignment with the video memory. On the contrary, the thermal pad only covers a small part of the video memory, and it also covers the GPU core, making the GPU temperature to 76°C. After replacing the thermal pads by myself, the temperature dropped to 61°C.

If the temperature of the video memory or other components is too high, the player may encounter problems such as dropped frames or a black screen after a certain period of time. When the player encounters these situations, it is best to disassemble the graphics card to see if the thermal pad is properly attached or missing. However, for the vast majority of graphics cards, as long as the graphics card is removed, it means that the warranty is lost.
