What new announcements will Apple WWDC23 have?

With less than a month remaining until Apple’s annual WWDC23 conference, the company has not made any significant announcements since the launch of the iPhone 14 series last September, leaving many to wonder if Apple is preparing a significant reveal. Barring any surprises, Apple WWDC23 will primarily unveil the new generation of operating systems led by iOS 17. This time, Apple is rumored to introduce the long-awaited AR/VR headset, marking the company’s first foray into a new product category since the 2015 Apple Watch.

Apple-focused website MacRumors has summarized some rumored information about Apple’s new products, mentioning that iOS 17 will include a new diary app, enhanced utility for the Animated Island, an improved Control Center interface, emotion tracking in health features, and displaying lyrics on the lock screen for Apple Music, among other minor improvements. The ability to sideload apps is a notable feature that may only be available in European regions.

As for the highly anticipated AR/VR headset, it is rumored to be called Reality One or Reality Pro, featuring two 4K micro-OLED screens provided by Sony, and multiple external cameras for capturing the real world and enabling seamless switching between AR and VR. Internally, the headset will be powered by two Mac-grade M2 chips, one with superior performance for handling system and app processing, and a low-power version for managing sensors, as well as iris scanning, ultra-low latency ISP, and wireless chips.

Apple’s AR/VR headset will run a dedicated xrOS, supporting iPad apps for viewing Netflix or YouTube content. To reduce weight and increase comfort, it will not have a built-in battery, instead relying on an external battery pack with a battery life of approximately two hours. Like other AR/VR headsets, users with prescription glasses can opt for custom lenses with the appropriate prescription.

At present, these rumors may differ significantly from the actual situation. However, as the market leader in an industry where smartphones and tablets are stagnating, will Apple pave a new path or create a new revenue stream, reinvigorating the market? The answer lies in closely observing the WWDC23 event scheduled for early June.
