TSMC will give priority to allocating capacity to Apple’s orders

Although Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has strong R&D and management capabilities, it is still difficult to completely get rid of the impact of the shortage of the semiconductor industry. If necessary, it still has to make sacrifices to satisfy certain decisions. One of them is the arrangement of orders. To which partner will the limited capacity be allocated, Apple is currently the one with the highest priority.

According to DigiTimes, in terms of orders, Apple and some other partners are the first priority, and then PC and server manufacturers. One of the reasons why Apple is favored is its huge resources. The huge sales of iPhone, iPad, and Mac product lines allow Apple to obtain sufficient production capacity from TSMC, which also helps wafer foundries maintain profit levels.

Apple’s control in various markets can also have enough confidence to negotiate to obtain new technologies. In the cooperation with TSMC, it not only has priority to obtain the production capacity of the 4nm process but also obtained the first batch of orders for the 3nm process. Recently, there are reports that Apple has discontinued iPhone 12 mini production in the second quarter due to poor sales. Perhaps a reasonable allocation of resources to ensure the launch of new models this year is also one of the factors.

At present, the A15 chip on the iPhone 13 series has also entered the mass production stage, and new products are expected to be launched as planned. The partnership between TSMC and Apple is getting closer. Even the shortage of production capacity will ensure Apple’s supply. As a result, Qualcomm is unable to obtain sufficient production capacity from TSMC. The changing market situation has forced Qualcomm to choose to cooperate with Samsung.
