The EU has approved Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub

We reported that Reuters said that the EU would unconditionally approve Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub transactions. On the evening of October 19, the EU officially issued a press release confirming that the deal was unconditionally approved.

The EU said that after a five-week survey, the deal would not hinder market competition. The combination of Microsoft and GitHub will not raise competition concerns, as the newly merged entity will continue to face fierce competition from other rivals in the market.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced in the deal earlier this year that GitHub will remain an open platform and retain its developer-first style and operate independently. The EU seems to agree with this position and points out that Microsoft has no incentive to undermine the openness of the GitHub platform because, with a little carelessness, its 28 million developer users can turn to competitors’ services at any time.
