Qualcomm expects 5G smartphone shipments to increase by 150% in 2021

According to reports, Qualcomm predicts that in 2020, 5G smartphone shipments will reach 200 million units, and will increase by 150% to 500 million units in 2021. Last week, Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf attended the Tianyi Intelligent Ecological Industry Summit and delivered a speech.

He believes that by 2022, global 5G smartphone shipments are expected to reach 750 million; by 2023, the number of global 5G connections is expected to exceed 1 billion, two years faster than 4G reaching the same number of connections; by 2025, the world, the number of 5G connections is expected to be close to 3 billion, and 5G traffic will account for 45% of global mobile network data traffic.

Earlier, Frank Meng as Chairman of Qualcomm China said that the current sharp drop in the price of 5G mobile phones has boosted the growth of 5G mobile phones. Since the last quarter, half of the mobile phones are 5G mobile phones, and the Chinese market is the most representative. At the same time, this situation will be seen in more emerging markets in the future, because many Chinese mobile phone manufacturers provide products for these emerging markets.

5G new vulnerabilities

Over the years, Apple and Qualcomm have been engaged in fierce legal battles over intellectual property rights, but they reached a settlement in April 2019. At that time, the two major companies signed a six-year extendable license agreement and a multi-year chipset supply agreement, which paved the way for Apple’s iPhone 12 series and other products to use Qualcomm’s 5G modem.

Recently, Apple’s newly released iPhone 12 was disassembled. The disassembly revealed that the company used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 modem chip in its first-generation 5G smartphone iPhone 12 series. According to the report of the settlement between Apple and Qualcomm, Apple will continue to use Qualcomm’s modem chips compatible with 5G networks until at least 2023.
