MSI AMD 600 series motherboard M.2 socket will be tool-less installation

On the new generation of motherboards, more and more M.2 slots are configured by manufacturers. With the decline in the price of NAND flash memory chips, the price of M.2 SSDs is also getting cheaper and cheaper, even lower than the price of 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Affordable prices, better performance, smaller sizes, and fewer cables make many users more inclined to buy M.2 SSD to expand storage capacity.

Recently, Twitter user @g01d3nm4ng0 exposed the demo manuscript and operation manual of the MSI AMD 600 series motherboard, showing the new M.2 SSD tool-free installation method, called “Screwless M.2 Shield Frozr”, and also applied for a patent for it. The new M.2 SSD installation method is very simple, users do not need screws and tools, and will be used on the X670 and B650 motherboards of the MEG and MPG series, such as MEG X670E GODLIKE, MEG X670E ACE, and MPG X670E Carbon WiFi, etc.

MSI’s other AMD 600-series motherboards still use “EZ M.2 clips,” another simple installation method that also requires no tools. It is understood that, except for the Mini-ITX B650, the rest of the non-“Screwless M.2 Shield Frozr” will use “EZ M.2 clips”. MSI has patented the feature and plans to roll it out across its upcoming motherboard portfolio.

In fact, MSI showed the “Screwless M.2 Shield Frozr” in the MSI Insider Livestream a month ago, and the corresponding motherboard is MEG X670E ACE, showing that the whole process is very simple and fast. MSI also attaches thermal pads to the heatsink in the motherboard’s M.2 slot for better heat transfer. Considering the higher heat generation of PCIe 5.0 SSD, a heatsink must be used for stable operation.
