Montage Technology Launches the World’s First CXL Memory eXpander Controller

Montage Technology announced the launch of the world’s first CXL (Compute Express Link) memory expansion controller chip (MXC). It is specially designed for memory AIC expansion cards, backplanes, and EDSFF memory modules, which can greatly expand memory capacity and bandwidth to meet the needs of data-intensive applications such as high-performance computing and artificial intelligence.

According to Montage Technology, this CXL memory expansion controller chip belongs to the third device type defined by the CXL protocol, supports JEDEC DDR4 and DDR5 standards, and also complies with the CXL 2.0 specification and supports PCIe 5.0. This chip can provide a high-bandwidth, low-latency, high-speed interconnect solution for CPUs and CXL-based devices, thereby realizing memory sharing between CPUs and CXL devices. Not only can system performance be dramatically improved, but software stack complexity and data center total cost of ownership (TCO) can be reduced.

In addition, Montage Technology also announced that it is the first in the industry to trial-produce the second-generation DDR5 Registered Clock Driver Chip (RCD), model M88DR5RCD02, which supports a data transfer rate of 5600 MT/s. An RCD is a buffer between the memory controller and the DRAM IC that redistributes command/address signals within the module to improve signal integrity and connect more memory devices to one DRAM channel.

Montage Technology stated that the M88DR5RCD02 complies with the latest JEDEC second-generation DDR5 Registered Clock Driver (RCD02) standard. Compared with the first-generation RCD chip M88DR5RCD01, which supports a data transfer rate of 4800 MT/s, the maximum supported rate is increased by 16.67%. It supports 1.1V VDD and 1.0V VDDIO voltage and multiple power-saving modes and also includes advanced features such as CA, CS, and DFE training modes and dual-frequency support.
