Microsoft Visual Studio 2022 preview is coming

Microsoft said that the first public preview of Visual Studio 2022 will be released this summer. Microsoft also revealed that the next major version of Visual Studio will be faster, easier to use, and lighter, designed for learners and those who build industrial-scale solutions. At the same time, Visual Studio will be 64-bit; the user experience will also be more complete.

The official announcement pointed out that this summer’s public preview will only include some of the features that will be released, and other features will appear in subsequent updates. Preview 1 will specifically include some UI improvements and accessibility improvements.

Microsoft explained that after Visual Studio 2022 shifts to 64-bit, it will no longer be limited to about 4GB of memory in the main devenv.exe process. Using 64-bit Visual Studio on Windows, users can open, edit, run, and debug the largest and most complex solutions without running out of memory.

In addition, the Visual Studio 2022 version will also include:
  • Updated icons for better clarity, legibility, and contrast.
  • Cascadia Code, a new fixed-width font for better readability and ligature support. (If you like, you can try Cascadia Code today! https://aka.ms/CascadiaCode)
  • Refreshed and improved product themes.
  • Integration with Accessibility Insights to detect accessibility issues early on—before they get to your end-users.
  • Visual Studio 2022 will have full support for .NET 6 and its unified framework for web, client, and mobile apps for both Windows and Mac developers
  • Visual Studio 2022 will include robust support for the C++ workload with new productivity features, C++20 tooling, and IntelliSense.
