Microsoft tests new Edge for Android and iOS

Microsoft has released the Edge browser for Android and iOS respectively, accelerating its progress towards the goal of uniformity across desktop and mobile versions of Edge.

Microsoft promised in Ignite 2021 in March this year that it will use the same source code for Edge on desktop, Android, and iOS platforms, and also strive to make the cross-platform version of Edge function consistent. Before that, although they were all called “Edge” and adopted the same logo design, in fact, the iOS version of Edge uses the WebKit engine, while the Android version uses Blink, which has fewer functions than the desktop version.

Last week, Microsoft announced that it will soon open the iOS version of the Edge app to the iOS developers of the Insiders solution through TestFlight. Apple’s TestFlight program allows up to 10,000 testers to try out the app before it is officially released. Microsoft said this is part of the company’s plan to bring desktop and mobile apps closer together.

Microsoft also announced that the Edge Canary version for Android has been on the Google Play Store for Android developers to download and try. The latest version of Edge Canary is based on Chromium 91, which greatly increases its performance and has almost all the experimental features of Google Chrome.
