iPadOS 17 may discontinue support for certain iPads

As previously reported, Apple is set to hold its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) online from June 6th to 10th, introducing new systems such as iOS 17, watchOS 10, and iPadOS 17, along with the potential unveiling of Apple’s first mixed reality device. While new features brought by these systems are undoubtedly the focus of consumer attention, many users are concerned about the upgrade compatibility for older devices. Citing Wccftech, iPadOS 17 may discontinue support for certain iPads.

iPadOS 17 is likely to abandon support for iPad (5th generation), iPad Pro 9.7-inch (1st generation), and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st generation). The iPad (5th generation) was released in March 2017, featuring a non-laminated display and an A9 processor. The iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st generation) was released in September 2015, while the iPad Pro 9.7-inch (1st generation) was released in March 2016; both devices are equipped with A9X processors. Although the A9 and A9X are both dual-core processors, the A9X boasts a notably higher operating frequency and GPU specification than the A9.

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus were released in September 2015, sharing the same A9 processor as the iPad (5th generation). These phones came preinstalled with iOS 9 and were upgradeable up to iOS 15, missing out on iOS 16. Considering Apple’s approach to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, it is not surprising that iPadOS 17 may discontinue support for the iPad (5th generation).

iPadOS was introduced in June 2019; prior to this, both iPads and iPhones used the iOS system. However, there are distinct differences in screen sizes between phones and tablets. iPadOS not only offers more optimization for larger screens but also provides iPads with a partially desktop-like experience, reflecting Apple’s intent to enhance the productivity capabilities of the iPad.

As WWDC approaches, Apple will announce the compatibility list for iPadOS 17. Nevertheless, based on currently disclosed information, it is highly probable that these three iPad models will miss out on iPadOS 17.
