Intel launches the last Optane product: Optane P5810X

In the second quarter of this year, Intel confirmed that it will officially close the Optane business, which is the sixth non-core business to be divested since Pat Gelsinger took over as Intel CEO. Intel had high hopes for the Optane business when it launched in 2015, but it has rarely been mentioned in 2022. On the one hand, it was sold to SK Hynix for $9 billion on October 19, 2020. On the other hand, the retained Optane business is mainly for the enterprise market.

According to TomsHardware, Intel Optane SSD DC P5810X is quietly shipping recently, which should be the last storage device based on 3D XPoint flash memory, providing extremely high performance and endurance. With Intel shutting down the Optane business, there will be no more Optane storage products in the future.

The Intel Optane SSD DC P5810X series belongs to the drives codenamed the Alder Stream series, offering 400GB and 800GB capacities. It is a 2.5-inch U.2 form factor and uses a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface. Its sequential read speed is 7200 MB/s, sequential write speed is 5400 MB/s (800GB model) or 6000 MB/s (400GB model), and able to achieve up to 1.5M IOPS random read and up to 1.2M IOPS random write with 5μs read/write latency.

Of course, the biggest selling point of the Optane SSD DC P5810X series is its 100 DWPD endurance rating, something traditional 3D NAND flash-based products can’t offer. While storage-class memory solutions like Kioxia’s XL-FLASH and Samsung’s Z-NAND are still on the market, they still can’t match Optane storage devices in terms of durability.
