iFixit disassembles iPhone 11 Pro: suspected hardware supports two-way wireless charging

The iPhone 11 series has been released, and the well-known dismantling website iFixit has dismantled Apple’s next-generation flagship for the first time. In disassembly, iFixit found two battery connectors in the new iPhone, and further investigation revealed that the additional connectors were directly connected to the wireless charging coil.

When the phone is turned on, iFixit disconnected the battery connector below, the phone did not power off and continued to power through the lightning port, but could not be wirelessly charged. This indicates that this extra connector is directly connected to the wireless charging coil, which may be an important feature of two-way charging. More importantly, when iFixit reconnects the cable, the phone will display an instantaneous temperature warning before it returns to normal. iFixit suspect that it is out of sync with an important battery temperature sensor and shuts itself down; much like the thermal management of reverse wireless charging.

iFixit also found a “new mysterious board” under the battery of the new phone, most likely related to the two-way wireless charging function. The two-way wireless charging feature allows the iPhone to charge products like the AirPods battery case and Apple Watch, and maybe even charge another iPhone (useful when it’s urgent). Before the release of the iPhone 11, this feature was very much anticipated, and there were quite a few rumors related to it. There are rumors that Apple decided to remove this feature at the last minute.

Apple analyst Rene Ritchie once mentioned that Apple’s reason for cutting off the two-way wireless charging function may be that the charging efficiency is not satisfactory. It’s unclear whether Apple intends to activate this two-way wireless charging feature through firmware updates in the future, or to completely hide it, even if it is supported by hardware.
