Google will add native support for the Alliance for Open Media AV1 codec in Android Q

The Alliance for Open Media AV1 standard is currently being supported on various platforms, and the latest supported platform is Android Q operating system. According to Google, the company plans to introduce this standard as native support into the Android Q version, which adds the AV1 codec directly to the system. This means that Android Q will be better handled when subsequent streaming media adopts this standard, although there are not many streaming video videos currently using the AV1 standard.

Android Q Beta

Previously Microsoft had tested the AV1 codec in Windows 10 but required users to download the plugin. AV1 is the new codec and standard launched by the Alliance for Open Media, which is also the successor to Google’s leading VP 8~10 network standard.

The Open Media Alliance is formed by technology giants such as Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Facebook, etc., to combat the charged H.264 series of standards.
