Google and Qualcomm announce four major Android versions and four-year security update support for Snapdragon devices

In response to the fragmentation of the Android ecosystem, Google has taken a variety of measures, but for now, there are still many devices that cannot be upgraded to new versions.

So Google has now reached new cooperation with Qualcomm, which aims to provide long-term support for Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset devices, including Android version upgrades and security updates.

According to a press release issued by Qualcomm, Google will provide four Android versions and four years of security support for Snapdragon devices with Project Treble enhancements.

It is very good for users to be able to receive four Android versions and four years of security support. After all, Google has provided support for its own son series for only three years.

If you think that your Android device can also get updated support, it may be a bit embarrassing, because according to Google, it will only provide extended support for new devices.

The first chipset to receive extended support is Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, which means that devices equipped with this chip will at least be updated to the Android 14 version.

In the future, Google and Qualcomm may expand to support more Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets, but there is a high probability that existing Android devices will not be able to enjoy this new policy.

Google continues to work closely with our technology partners to increase the freshness of the Android ecosystem. Through this collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, we expect that Android users will have the latest OS upgrades and greater security on their devices,” said David Burke, vice president of Android engineering, Google.

We are excited to work with Google to extend our support for Android OS and security updates on future Snapdragon mobile platforms utilizing the Project Treble enhancements,” said Kedar Kondap, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Through this collaboration, we expect accelerated Android OS upgrade on Snapdragon based devices while providing a superior user experience for end users.”
