GM expects to launch a personal self-driving car Cruise by 2030

GM CEO Mary Barra predicts that the company will provide consumers with self-driving cars by 2030. On May 5, Bora told investors on the first-quarter earnings conference call: “I’ve always said we have kind of a revolutionary and an evolutionary strategy around driver assistance all the way to full Level 4, Level 5 autonomy“.

However, Barra did not make it clear that GM will sell self-driving cars directly to consumers. Of course, this does not rule out the possibility of leasing vehicles to consumers in the future. In response to this matter, a GM spokesperson said that the company is currently unable to disclose more information.

In January of this year, Cadillac, a GM brand, just showed off a personal self-driving concept car based on Cruise’s Orgin model, which is an autonomous driving subsidiary in which GM holds a majority stake.

Cruise is developing shared electric self-driving vehicles, which will operate in dense urban areas. The company is testing its technology on public roads in San Francisco but has not yet deployed a commercial-scale robotaxi or last-mile delivery service. Cruise also reached an agreement earlier this month to launch a robotaxi service in Dubai in 2023
