EU will force Apple to switch to the USB Type-C, related bills are being drafted

The European Union will once again try to force Apple to use the USB Type-C interface, thereby allowing all original equipment manufacturers to use a common charging standard.

At present, most Android manufacturers have switched to the USB Type-C interface so that the data line can be used universally. At present, most chargers can also be used universally with only a slight difference.

For example, the power of chargers introduced by different Android manufacturers is different. If the charger power used is low, the maximum charging power of the mobile phone may not be reached.

As for the interface, only Apple is still trying to fight the EU. Apple is unwilling to replace its own Lightning interface with a USB Type-C interface.

In order to reduce the amount of e-waste and achieve the purpose of protecting the environment, the European Parliament has voted by an overwhelming majority to support the use of universal chargers in the EU.

The European Commission will propose new legislation to establish universal charging standards for mobile phones and other electronic products sold in the European Union, including data line interfaces.

iPhone 11 USB-C

According to Reuters, the European Union is already drafting relevant legislation. If it is passed, all mobile phones sold in the European Union must adopt a common standard, the USB-C port.

Apple has always resisted changing the interface. Apple said that it can solve this problem through a USB-C to Lightning adapter to be compatible with other interfaces.

Of course, the paradox is that if Apple switches to USB Type-C, a large amount of electronic waste will still be generated in a short time, which will take a long time to complete the transition.

It also needs to be emphasized that the probability of Apple using USB Type-C is low because even if the company abandons the Lighting interface, it will not use other interfaces.

There has been news that Apple is working on an iPhone without an interface. After all, the 3.5mm headphone jack can be removed, and the charging and data ports can also be removed.

It’s just that there is still a technical problem for Apple that if the device fails and there is no data interface, it cannot be flashed through the PC and Mac.

Apple is considering adding dedicated contacts to the physical SIM card slot to achieve this goal, but it is still unclear whether such technical problems have been resolved.

So in the end, Apple may completely remove the data interface and completely change to wireless charging. At that time, the Android manufacturers may also follow this strategy.
