Developers make a virtual Apple Macintosh with System 8, running in Electron

On July 26, 1997, Apple officially launched the Mac OS 8 operating system to the outside world. It uses a 68k architecture instead of the PowerPC or x86 architecture we are familiar with.

Recently, Felix Rieseberg released on Github a software program that has converted Mac OS 8 as a virtual Apple Macintosh to run directly Windows, macOS, and Linux.

This software is called macintosh.js, written entirely in JavaScript, and users can simulate Mac OS 8 on modern desktop operating systems.

Since this behavior of the developer has not been authorized by Apple, no one can use this software in the commercial field and can only be used for educational purposes.

macintosh.js contains many software and games on the Mac OS 8 platform, such as Photoshop 3, Premiere 4, Illustrator 5.5, StuffIt Expander, the Apple Web Page Construction Kit, Oregon Trail, Duke Nukem 3D, Civilization II, Alley 19 Bowling, Damage Incorporated, Dungeons & Dragons and more.

Although Mac OS 8 has built-in Internet Explorer browser developed by Microsoft and Netscape browser developed by Netscape, the developers said that these browser versions are too old, and even Google’s website cannot render and open normally.
