Apple starts to make iPhone in India

Apple continues to invest in manufacturing operations in India, and it is expected that the company will soon begin exporting iPhones produced in the country to other markets around the world. The Indian government has confirmed this week that this shows that Cupertino, California-based Apple, and their partners plan to expand iPhone production in India, while also focusing on other areas such as parts manufacturing.

Apple first disclosed its manufacturing facilities in India when it produced the iPhone SE in India. Soon, the local manufacturing business has gradually expanded to other models, including the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, and the newer iPhone X and XR. Some of these models are also expected to be shipped to foreign markets, and Apple has confirmed recently that Apple is producing the iPhone 11 in India.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, India’s Minister of Information Technology, said that expansion will not stop, and iPhone exports of mobile phones and parts alone will reach $1.6 billion in 2019. Apple’s two Indian partners, Salcomp and Foxconn, are also preparing large-scale investments in their local businesses.

Salcomp will begin manufacturing parts, including chargers, and plans to invest nearly $ 300 million over the next five years. The government says the plan will help create about 10,000 jobs locally. At the same time, Foxconn hopes to increase the number of production facilities from two to four and expand existing businesses by adding new production lines, which will help to assemble more iPhones locally.

Developing manufacturing facilities in India could help Apple reduce its dependence on China, especially given the existing trade tensions between Beijing and Washington.
