Apple accounted for 18% of the smartphone market shipments, Revenue accounted for 48% in 2022

Not long ago, Apple announced its financial report for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2023. Quarterly revenue was $117.154 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 5.5%; net profit was $29.998 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 13.4%. Although both revenue and net profit have declined year-on-year, the profit margin of Apple’s smartphone is still far higher than that of other smartphone manufacturers. Recently, Counterpoint Research released a report that in 2022, Apple accounted for 18% of smartphone market shipments, 48% of revenue, and 85% of profits.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, Apple’s smartphone shipments were about 70 million units and Samsung’s shipments were about 58.3 million units. Apple surpassed Samsung and ranked first in shipments. According to previous reports, due to the continuous impact of the epidemic at Foxconn’s Zhengzhou factory since October last year, the capacity utilization rate has been difficult to break through by 70%. During Apple’s peak season in the fourth quarter, shipments of the iPhone 14 series fell by 15 million to 20 million units. If the factory is not affected by the epidemic, it is expected that Apple’s lead will be even larger.

Due to the global economic downturn and the gradual saturation of the smartphone market, global smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2022 dropped by 18% year-on-year to 304 million units; full-year smartphone shipments in 2022 dropped by 12% to 1.2 billion units, the lowest level since 2017; global smartphone revenue dropped 9% to $409 billion in 2022, also the lowest level since 2017.

As most mobile phone manufacturers pay more and more attention to the high-end market, the average selling price (ASP) of smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2022 increased by 5% year-on-year. Through the precise distinction between the functions and appearance of the iPhone non-Pro series and the Pro series, Apple has successfully made the sales of the Pro series far exceed that of the non-Pro series, which has also brought higher profits. In 2022, Apple’s mobile phone revenue accounted for 48% of smartphone revenue, and its profits accounted for 85% of the global smartphone market.
