AMD will have B650E chipset: supports both PCIe 5.0 expansion slots and M.2 storage

AMD introduced the upcoming Zen 4 architecture Ryzen 7000 series processors and the corresponding AM5 platform at Computex 2022 and announced the X670E, X670, and B650 chipsets, where E stands for EXTREME. According to AMD, the X670E and X670 are composed of two Promontory 21 chips. The motherboard equipped with the former will support both PCIe 5.0 expansion slots and PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots, the latter only supports PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots, and the B650 has only one Promontory 21 chip.

It was reported last month that ASRock’s AMD 600 series motherboard list, in addition to AMD’s announced X670E, X670, and B650 chipsets, also has an unconfirmed B650E chipset. If taken literally, the difference between B650E and B650 should be the same as between X670E and X670.

Recently, Twitter user @wxnod leaked a picture showing the four chipsets X670E, X670, B650E, and B650 listed on the slide of the large screen in the conference room. The X670E and B650E support both PCIe 5.0 expansion slots and PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots, and the X670 and B650 support PCIe 5.0 expansion slots or PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots. This shows that there are at least four chipsets on the AM5 platform, and once again confirms the existence of the B650E chipset, but the differences between them seem to be slightly different from the past.

AMD will hold a live event called “together we advance_PCs” at 7:00 pm EST on August 29, 2022, and announce the next generation of AMD’s PC products. It was previously rumored that AMD originally planned to launch the B650 motherboard in September, but the decision was later postponed.
