AMD releases FidelityFX Super Resolution plug-in for Unreal Engine 4

In July of this year, AMD fulfilled its commitment to open source when FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology went live, put its source code, development documents, and examples on the AMD GPUOpen website, and stated that it would provide patches for Unreal Engine 4. Obviously, in order to compete with Nvidia DLSS, AMD is accelerating the popularization of FidelityFX Super Resolution technology.

Recently, AMD released a FidelityFX Super Resolution plug-in for Unreal Engine 4. In addition to plug-ins, AMD also provides a quick overview, which includes recommended settings for each FidelityFX Super Resolution mode, and you can use the ScreenPercentage option to modify the zoom effect. AMD also describes each mode:
  • Ultra Quality : r.ScreenPercentage 77
    Produces an image with quality virtually indistinguishable from native rendering. It should be selected when the highest quality is desired.
  • Quality : r.ScreenPercentage 67
    Produces a super resolution image with quality representative of native rendering, with a sizeable performance gain.
  • Balanced : r.ScreenPercentage 59
    Produces a super resolution image approximating native rendering quality, with a major performance gain compared to native.
  • Performance : r.ScreenPercentage 50
    Visibly impacts image quality and should only be selected in situations where needing additional performance is critical.

AMD said that the FidelityFX Super Resolution plug-in already has a contrast adaptive sharpening channel, which means that developers must ensure that the existing CAS integration is disabled in advance. In addition, you can use the FidelityFX Super Resolution plug-in with TAAU through a hybrid upgrade mode.

Currently, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution can work with Unreal Engine 4.271.1, but there is no version suitable for Unreal Engine 5 yet. It is estimated that it will take a while. In contrast, Nvidia has provided DLSS plug-ins for both Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5.
